The art history of the 20th century was an era of drastic shifts in paradigms, where the continuous emergence of new forms and concepts incessantly challenged conventional perceptions of the very essence of art. For Chinese art history, this was a pivotal period of East-West fusion and the intertwining of the old and the new. A central theme that resonated throughout the century was how to evolve an innovative expression characterized by inclusiveness and modernity, while firmly rooted in the excellence of Chinese traditional heritage.
The He Xiangning Art Museum has long been dedicated to the academic curation and systematic study of modern and contemporary Chinese art. Adopting a rigorous research perspective, this exhibition focuses on the unique realm of Modern Chinese-style Landscape Painting. Amidst the turbulent progress of the 20th century, the conceptual collision between traditional Shanshui and Western Landscape brought about transformative changes. Moving beyond the confines of their studios, artists of this period immersed themselves in the historical realities of national development and the Reform and Opening-up era. By directly engaging with the majestic mountains and rivers, they synthesized Chinese and Western pictorial philosophies. Consequently, landscape painting evolved from a mere vessel for personal spiritual repose into a vital medium for expressing national spirit and exploring modern aesthetic forms.
Bringing together masterpieces by twenty renowned artists, this exhibition seeks to delineate a visual feast of profound temporal tension and spiritual character. From the burgeoning vitality of spring’s awakening to the fusion of representation and impressionistic freehand in the depiction of snow, trees, and mist, and further to the nuanced treatment of nocturnal scenes—these landscapes, imbued with deep Chinese sensibility, offer a distinct cultural response in both technique and subject matter. Reflecting the original spirit of the exhibition title, Beyond the Mundane: Ethereal Mists and Clouds, we hope these forty-six exquisite works provide city-dwellers a transcendental intellectual journey through clouds and peaks. May this experience offer a moment of serene detachment and a profound encounter with the enduring lineage of Chinese traditional culture in its modern manifestation.
